From Japanese point of view...

As I read reviews in Japan it seems that there's criticism more than praise. "For western people there's no difference between Japanese or Chinese, they think Asians all the same. It's insulting." "OK, all that stereotypes...It's not real Japan." When I heard that Chinese actresses play Geishas'roles and the movie does not come in Japanese, I was really disappointed. Also when I saw the movie I felt weird about the mix of different accent and usage of some Japanese words like "One-san."
But I was really impressed by the excellent performance of Chinese actresses. Although I think Japanese actresses should'd ve been appointed, it's not only the Marketing reason but Japanese actresses couldn't win the part because of their English. I really hope Japanese actresses will be as powerful and well known as Zhang Ziyi.
I'd like to point out another important thing. We have to note that Memoirs of a Geisha is not originally written by Japanese but American, so the story itself is from Western point of view and it's just a fiction. Therefore if the movie is full of stereotype and it's not real Japan, it's natural for me. So when I evaluate this movie, I put more focus on how beautiful the graphics are and how well the actors and actresses played, not on how real the Japanese culture and the people were.
I think this movie is worth the money to watch.
Thank you for reading this review and sorry about my poor English. |
