I'm sick of hearing people say that this movie stirred up all those cultural indifferences and all that.. the chinese are calling out these actors and actresses for being traitors because the Japanese killed and raped Nanking decades ago... and the Japanese are saying casting Chinese as Japanese is an insult to their oh-so-mighty image...
this is novel turned to the big screen... and I think the director did an amazing job after his Chicago oscar-worthy directing... it is done by a foreigner.. but it does capture the essence of the culture... as a Chinese... I thought it was weird to have chinese actresses as the lead roles to this very Japanese story... but then I read the director's comments about how he auditioned so many Japanese actresses, who all backed out because they need to speak English for this film, and as Ziyi learned while on set, she managed to cover her language barrier with her performance.. and that is why she is an internationally known star...
so if you enjoy oscar kinda movie, this is great... you do not need any of the controversies stirred up by the media and the ignorants to affect your chance of seeing a movie that it different from other lame movies that we've seen throughout the year... this movie guides you into a world of a different culture... with really great performances done by great actors and actresses...
this movie is A+... unless your defintion of a great movie needs nudity and car chases and explosives... |
