Mermoir of Geisha is one of my favorite book. The movie came out to be a disappointment. the book was full of pretty descriptive scene while the movie is lacking of aesthetic senses. Director Marshall and Producer Speilberg did not do a good job in condensing the novel into a 2-hours sth movie, at least, not as well as Peter Jackson did to his "Lord of The Ring" series. In the "Memoir of Geisha" many scenes were cut out, leaving it an empty films with many gret actors.
Also, I have to respond to many reviewers' comment on the movie's language. The reason the movie is not in Japanese, eventhough its setting is in Japan, is that the book is based on the book! As simple as that. Why would the movie producing team bother to translate every lines from the English novel into Japanese scripts and subtitle the film in English? That is insane and whoever said that is either did not read the book or did not have a basic sense.
Also, the reason the actors were speaking in a heavy accent were due to the fact that the director wanted the movie to have a more authentic feel. Eventho three main actresses, Zhang Ziyi, Michelle Yeong, and Gong Li were Chinese (Michelle Yeong was Chinese-Malaysian), they tried their best to give the audience a more authentic feel. However, it ends up to be quite a disaster because only Michelle Yeong was capable to speak clearly. As for Acting, I believe they all had done a great job. Due to all the historic/social relationship between Japan and China, I feel they all were very professional as an actor to be part of this movie. |
