i admit that i was in the mood to see this film. i had a tough day, and was keen to just sit back and let Hollywood take me away on a big adventure while i enjoyed my Coke and popcorn.
i was not disappointed. this wonderful film is a brilliant fabric of high-seas adventure and intriguing inter-personal chemistry, with Russell Crowe (who i'm not normally a huge fan of) turning in a stellar performance as Captain Jack. however, the best acting, without question, lies in the hands of Paul Bettany, who is a bit of an odd bird, more interested in biology than warfare. the relationship between the two provides a welcome plotline to sustain interest between action scenes.
there are 20 books in this series, and one would expect to believe that Hollywood will milk this franchise as far as they possibly can. however, with this film running at $150M to make, rumours abound that the studio has already said no to future installments. i expect that the massive success (and likely oscar nominations) of this film will have them thinking twice. |
