Not often does a flick exceed your expectations or reach beyond it's promise. I think they've done that here.
Though there is a great deal of action, it's not wall to wall. Also a thinking person's movie, you are absorbed into the seaman's world of the time. They lived it all over again for the audience to see, right down to the tightest details, it seems. The passing of the Cape Horn is utterly unforgettable.
Casting of Russel Crowe...and pretty much everyone else was about as good as it gets. Crowe was made for this role...part scallywag and part iron leader...he lives this one too.
In the end you could almost weep seeing what a cost they paid to keep freedom in the world. Though that hasn't changed, it will hit you hard. This is one time you can really live it with the crew of the Surprize and see just how tough their world was.
I get pretty cynical about Hollywood, but this time, they really did what they do best. Hat's off to the whole crew. |
