I saw the pre-release screener for this gem, and boy am I impressed. I must reiterate: This movie is incredible. I am floored. It was everything I expected it to be and more.
Don't go into it expecting a deep, philosophical mind fest. This movie is fun. Really fun. If you don't want to buy a samurai sword and run around with it waving it wildly after the movie's done, then you weren't paying attention.
First of all, I just have to say that one of the most brilliant moves was to give almost each villian a deep, and involved backstory. This serves to make each of the 'Assassin buddies' more than just a faceless 'boss' and more of a personality that must be terminated.
Uma Thurmond is positively bad ass, and far more than I thought she would be. I very much believed that she was an assassin, and she was quite sexy at it too.
Also, be prepared for some serious over the top-ness. When an arm comes off, blood spurts. When a head comes off, more blood spurts.
Although I will say that at one point, you really got the feeling that the MPAA had MADE certain scenes be shot in sihillouto and black and white to cut down on the gore factor so the movie COULD get an R-rating and not an NC-17 one.
I really don't know what to say, except to gush profusely (no pun intended) about how great it was. It was everything I expected it to be, except just a little bit more serious.
Oh, BTW, there's a surprising amount of story and dialouge scenes intermixed with the violence. Also, be prepared for a postively bad assed anime cut sequence about halfway through the movie that will rock your boxers as well.
You absolutely must see this now. You're doing yourself a disfavor by wasting time reading my review instead of being in the theater watching this work of art. |
