I liked the original for many reasons.... those were described in detail in my review of the original. I also said I felt like Salva would delve into the one element he didn't in the first film... and that is not such a good thing.
While the original had great chemistry between the two siblings being chased, and thus we CARED for them, this show has throw away caricatures and almost no relationships to speak of.
Salva had and showed potential in the opening scene.. but instead of creating that kind of momentum.... the movie's setting became Camp Crystal Lake with a flat tire.
The Creeper is a great villian... one of the best in horrordom. Though the villian has some interesting new tricks and has one great scene... he doesn't really do enough.... We know he invinciple and when athletes walk under the whole in the roof.... Please!!
So why do I not give this an "F"- cause it isn't Horrible.. it is just badly executed.
Salva we know has a bad past... (A VERY BAD one at that).... and because of his preferences does fill the screen with young, and very very cute males as eye candy. That isn't necassarily a crime, as girls have been taking off their shirts ever since Norman Bates crashed Janet Leigh's special shower, and they have been doing it up until Freddy and Jason's last bloodfest (which I liked...).
Directors (and I have a degree in it) Often stick an underlying theme or vision or subtle image in their movies. Salva (like myself) is gay, and this movie is filled with some homo friendly to twisted scenes. (This goes from the guys taking off their shirts and getting tan-- no crime--- but they are lined up in a row-- as if to say take your pick, to a bizarre group urination scene- which really is there as an extention of Justin doing the same thing in JC1) The sad thing is that at times we see Salva delve to much into it... and this will bother the audience.
I am all for a great gay themed movie... or a movie with gay characters.. but I really was wondering what turn on or what was in his head while he was filming the now famous "boys line up and pee scene". (Salva must be a fan of water sports-- and I am nottalking about swimming)This will obviously be conceived as "gay disturbing" and possibly it is.... but really, is there a better place for a director to exorcise his demons... than by having one do the sniffing and eating for him..... |
