This little gem surprised me

In the middle of a traditionally slow time for movies, when there is not a whole lot out that I thought I cared terribly to see, The Jacket jumped up and scratched me right where I itched.
I needed a movie and although I thought The Jacket looked a little corny and deranged, I thought I'd go give it a shot. In surprising fashion, what I got was a more thought provoking film than many critics are giving it credit for. The Jacket held my attention very well and though there were definitely a few holes one could punch in the overall plot, I enjoyed where it took me. In my mind, there were 2 different ways that you could take what was really going on and I loved the conflict between those contrasting hypothesis.
I thought the acting was suberb. Kiera Knightly is fantastic in everything in which I have seen her. At her young age, she has already played so many very different roles and showed exceptional range as an actress by pulling them all off very well. Adrian Brody is not a major favorite of mine, but was very good for this part as a Persian Gulf veteran who had a type of amnesia that made it difficult to tell what was real and to know who he really was.
I went in to this movie expecting a typical horror/thriller and instead got treated to a smart psychological thriller/drama. Maybe going in with low expectations helped, but I woke up thinking about this movie the next morning...a consistent sign for me that I really enjoyed it. |
