A tried and true story line of boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy gets girl. Unfortunately it does not come off as entertaining as it could due to directing that bounces you along the story line in short and unsatisfying snippets. The two main characters are a self-absorbed divorce attorney Miles Massey (George Clooney)and a gold-digging fem-fatal named Marilyn (Catherine Zeta Jones). These two meet when Miles represents Marilyn's estranged husband in the divorce proceedings. Even though attracted to Marilyn, Miles pulls some courtroom slight of hand that leaves Marilyn with nothing after the divorce. Unfortunately from this point on the story follows a very predictable pattern that leaves you hopeful the movie will end soon if it were not for a short but imaginative scene with a hired hit man named Wheezy.
George Clooney's comedic talent that was so much fun in his 1996 performance in the film 'One Fine Day' was wasted in this film. If there is such a thing as a male bubble-head then the Miles character fits.
Catherine Zeta Jones is as beautiful as ever and managed to pull her character off despite the obstacles of tired storyline and less than effective direction. There are worse movies out but if your money is tight this would not be the first or even the second on the list to see. |
