The Human Stain is full of surprises, not shocks. What surprises us surprises us because of the self-same assumptions and politics that the film critiques.
What at first unfolds like some type of icy murder-mystery, slowly evoles into a deep human drama, that then supporst a powerful examination of society. The best element of the film though, is how it manages despite its handling of so many different elements to maintain what is centrally is human story; a story of grief, pain, crisis and love. And the tone remains consistently attuned to this throughout.
Wonderful performances by Kidman and Hopkins, and a subtle supporting role by Harris, makes this intelligent movie one of the best of the year. |
