The Harry Potter series are my favorite books by a long shot. However, after watching Alfonso Cuarón slaughter the books and the work Chris Columbus did on the first two, i am forced to throw Harry Potter out of my favorite movies category.
Sitting in the theater expecting the best book to become the best movie of the series, i found myself hiding in shame to added parts to the books and key information that was left out. I understand that time was an issue, but the unexcusable fact is the third installment was a much longer book and a shorter movie than the first two. For whatever reason Alfonso Cuarón decided to change the scenery and not only move Hagrids cabin, but the school itself relocated on a hillside in scottland (i doubt even albus dumbledore could tackle this feat.) It seemed this movie existed to bring glorified effects and attempts at humor into the HP series.
The actors have grown into their roles and played them better than ever before. Ron (Rupert Grint) consistantly brings laughs, Hermione (Emma Watson) continues to bring all males to their seat wondering what she will look like in the 7th movie, and Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) draws you into his wizarding world like never before.
Overall I would have to say this movie was a disappointment. There was too much change, too little explanation to the story line, and just plain too much left out.
My faith is shaken but not gone. Mike Newell (Mona Lisa Smile, Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral,...)
has his chance at the 4th book the Goblet of Fire and should prove to be a blessing to the HP series. Good luck Mike. |
