Freddy vs. Jason. Okay, I knew the comic-book-like pairing of these two villans might get a little goofy and hard to believe, but I spent the money anyway. Most people already know the story line (or lack of one), so I'll just go with the good and the bad...
The Good:
-The special effects, particularly during the fight scene between Freddy and Jason. The blood-letting was extremely unrealistic, but die-hard horror fans will forgive that.
-Comic relief by everyone's favorite dream monster. I'll never again be able to hear someone say "Got your nose" without cracking up.
-The body count. Yes, this is the ultimate showdown; it would be disappointing to see less than twenty people drowning in their own blood.
The Bad:
-The acting. It's particularly depressing to see the two leads warbling through their lines like they don't know what they're doing. The lead actress (I can't remember her name, which gives an idea of how important the plot was) is so wishy-washy with her lines it's as if she's spoofing horror-movie heroines.
-Poorly executed slayings. At least three of the killings were just ridiculous, turning the movie into more of a comedy than a horror flick.
The Confusing:
-Nudity. Okay, nudity in a horror movie is practically a law, but there should be some point to it. The opening shot includes a woman baring her talents and doing a little dance by Crystal Lake. Why?
-The plot. The idea of bringing Jason back to help Freddy terrorize teenagers works, but the Skewer-Wanna-Bes figure it out WAAAAY too easily in a five-minute "I guess Freddy brought Jason back from the dead to plant fear in our hearts" speech. These guys don't know anything about either bad guy, yet they immediately guess what's going on? No. Then we take a van ride to Crystal Lake with a kidnapped Jason in the back, so he can "be on his own turf" when he battles Freddy. Yeah...lots of logic there.
Overall:
The movie wasn't bad, but it wasn't really good either. You definitely want to see it in the theater, however, because the special effects are what make the entertainment. Rather than being scary, the plot turns this evil showdown into a half-asked attempt at a gorefest that falls short of real fear. See it for the laughs (most of which are unintentional and stem from bad acting and goofy deaths) and the spurting blood, but try to do it during economy times. |
