I REALLY Wanted To Love This One...

...I really did. As an FF fan since 1967, I was eagerly anticipating this movie above all others this summer. The resounding success of the first two "Spider-Man" and "X-Men" flicks (and figuring they had learned a good lesson from "The Hulk"), gave me high hopes for lots of fun here; I was ready to jump up on the chair and cheer!
But, nope.
The best I can give the "Fantastic Four" movie overall is a "C".
It wasn't absolutely horrible; it did have it's moments.
For instance, Chiklis did a fine job bringing Ben Grimm to full emotional life, and the Thing make-up worked better than I originally thought it might. The interaction of the characters was fairly true to their 43-year history, and was the emphasis of the movie. The Torch effects I liked, and I also got a big kick out of Stan Lee's cameo as mailman Willie Lumpkin, which had been an "inside joke" in the original FF comics.
But the script was weak-- the set-up took nearly as long as the first "Superman" movie without nearly half the pay-off; and Doctor Doom, portrayed, as one critic put it, as "a Donald Trump wannabe" just didn't work very well at all.
This should have been to the original comics what "Indiana Jones" was to the 1940's movie serials. Maybe they should have asked for a plot from Stan-- or John Byrnne.
All in all, I left the theatre not entirely disappointed, but not entirely satisfied. |
