Ok, I had stacks and stacks of comic books when I was younger. Well until my mom made me throw them all away, I was a proud owner of most super heroes 'original' (how they got their powers)stories. I was glad to see The Fantastic Four movie didn't belittle us with an unbelievable origin by shying away from the origin too much.
Now I'm no scientist so I could care less if there really is a gamma this or a plasma that. Just make it SOUND good like Star Trek did. Reed Richards (the elogonated/stretchy Mr Fantastic)explaination of a cosmic cloud that may have started life itself with its DNA structure was good enough for this laymen. Its a super hero story for crying out loud, not a biology lesson so I enjoyed it.
Now the cloud is returning and Reed has a chance to learn more about it in hopes of tapping into it and finding cures for some of the worlds diseases and such. Maybe I'm just an optimist or a comic book lover but his idea still sounded good to me. So he's asking for finanicial support from an old college friend Victor Von Doom (Dr Doom) who knows Reed is a smart cookie and wants in on Reeds expedition. Doom also had a hidden agenda with Reed's old girfriend, the beautiful Sue Storm (Invisible Woman) whom Doom enlists to join the team. Even though Doom is rich beyond his OWN dreams, its apparent he's envious of Reeds intelligence and chemistry with his old girlfriend.
Sues brother Johnny Storm (Human Torch) is your classic thrill seeking daredevil whose immature attitude and childlike antics is really enhanced in several scenes but you learn to like him or not. Well until he learns to grow a little and become a team player.
Reeds also has his best friend Ben Grimm (The Thing) whom was great as his protector, confidant and trusty aid. The movie shows Ben's warm and intelligent side who had a resentment of his altered literally stonedfaced look through his super powers early but later made a couple of personal choices that in the end benefited him and his colleagues.
The team, headed by Reed along with Sue, her brother Johnny, Ben and Von Doom goes to outer space. Of course the cloud comes and an accident occurrs naturally. Ben, who was outside the ship gets the most of the clouds effects as it enters the ship when he tries to get back into the hatch. Doom is hiding behind safty shields in a far away corner of the ship but is still effected the least (at the time.)
Everyone soon discovers their powers in accepting and believable circumstances with fine tuned acting and special effects making it even more entertaining to the viewer.
We're first introduced to Johnny's fiery symptoms through a thermometer and we get a taste of his powers minutes later on a ski slope. Sue's emotionally enhanced powers get activated during an conversation with her old boyfriend Reed. When she discovers she's invisible she accidently knocks over a bottle which of course Reed stretches his arm to retrieve much to his own surprise. Doom is the last that we see that finds out that he can manipulate electricity. Since he was least effected he realizes he has to increase his powers in a similar way he got them. Now there wouldn't be much of a movie storyline if Doom wasn't financially treatened and his love interest taken from him thrusting him into a fit of revenge.
The super hero movie continues like most do with a small exception ...they become publically hailed through acts of life saving bravery and are even able to walk the streets and appear on television which is rare for most super heroes that need alter egos to function normally in society. I'm eargerly waiting for the sequel.
