So it wasn't an exact replica of the book, so what? Neither was Seabiscuit or Breakfast at Tiffany's or The Passion of the Christ.
First off, the book is hardly a "classic" considering it's been out for what, six years? And second, they had to expand the story to make it long enough to be worth $10.
I thought it was great because it stayed true to the essential concept of the book: that Ella was cursed with something she had to overcome. You have to give props to the writers for pulling off that part. They could've worn out the joke of her being made to look foolish, but they took it in another direction and forced her to stand up to it.
Parents will be happy to know that this film is decent for their kids to see. I don't remember hearing any profanity at all, and seeing her kiss the prince is about as adult as it gets.
But that's not to say adults won't like it. Anne Hathaway is SO talented and beautiful, and Vivica Fox is the coolest fairy ever.
The CGIs aren't exactly Spiderman, but this IS a fairy tale. And though the story is sorta predictable, the internal struggle Ella has to deal with comes out very well. The climax, where she finally gets what she wants, is nicely done, and forgive me for saying, it's better than the climax in the book. |
