VERY DARK, CREEPY AND FUNNY!

This movie has a current that can only be described as dark, creepy and funny. The mystery begins with Kidmann showing up in the town and we never fully understand exactly what she is running from. She plays a victim very well but apparently (although the audience or the townspeople never are convinced) she is wanted for some criminal activity.
The film takes you on a journey of how the townspeople embrace Nicole Kidmann's fugitive character, help her when she is in desperate need and then turn her desperation around so they begin to "use" her in very degrading fashion. Kidmann almost takes on a "religious" persona - like Jesus. She is increasingly loaded down with the burdens, guilt and darkness of the townspeople yet she bears them no hostility as they make her life hell. She holds forgiveness in her heart throughout the film and bears her cross of which the townspeople have laid upon her. In the end we discover the real reason why she is hiding and from whom.
The end is suprising. She is forced to question the townspeoples transgressions and evaluate whether their sins merit forgiveness or punishment. I won't tell you anymore if you are one of those who is able to sit through this very long but interesting film. I must admit that the movie theatre was full but I did see approximately 20 people leave halfway through. Take a deep breath and keep watching. It was slow and at times boring but the end justifies your reasons for sitting through it. |
