If you like this movie, I suggest you watch, "The Visit." Or, read Durrenmatt's , "Der Besuch den Alten Dame," the play that The Visit is based on. It's best if you read it in it's original German; even someone with a limited understanding of German like myself didn't have a hard time getting through it. It is based on similar themes as this movie, with a just as startling and painful ending.
P.S. I don't think this director is so much critiquing American society as he is critiquing all of mankind; the same goes for The Visit. If you can't handle looking deeply at the human psyche and society's flaws, you probably shouldn't look at either of these pieces of art...
