Meet Chuck Barris. By day, he's the producer of popular television shows like The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game, and the Gong Show. By night, he's a CIA covert operative. By the way, the screenplay for this film was written by Charlie Kaufman. You know you're in for something out of the ordinary.

Why was "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" so appealing to me? When the film debuted, it received mixed reviews from the critics, and didn't perform very well at the box office. Kaufman's first film, "Being John Malkovich" received much more critical attention and a few awards, too. But I liked "Confessions" much more than "Being John Malkovich." Obviously, it could be due to my fascination with the Central Intelligence Agency. I love television programs like "Alias" and "24," and they're all about the government. However, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" is different. It's got plenty of humor, drama, sex, and plain weirdness in one package.

George Clooney makes an impressive directorial debut here. His visuals are very edgy and unique. I also like that he was willing to take chances with the direction. It worked well. More impressive was Sam Rockwell's performance as Chuck Barris. He should have gotten more attention for his work. The supporting characters also turn in fine performances.

Although I like this film quite a bit, I can't go by recommending it to everybody. Some of the material might offend some people. However, if you've enjoyed films like "Adaptation" and "Being John Malkovich," then you should definitely see this. I consider "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" to be one of the best films of 2002.

Easter Egg: There's a Matt Damon and Brad Pitt cameo in the film where they participate as game show contestants.
