The Most Gritty Ride in Years

'Collateral' is probably one of the best crime thrillers in recent years. Michael Mann's gritty direction, along with the film's rough cinematography perfectly captures the dark mood and menacing hitman known as Tom Cruise. The acting steals the show however, with one of Cruise's most potent performances, and Jamie Foxx proving himself to be a true actor.

The film takes place in LA, and happens all in one entire night, wherein Vincent (Cruise) is hot on the trail of five of the most prominent personalities in a lucrative court case. By means of coincidence, a taxi driver named Max (Foxx), is forced to be the unlikely hero when Vincent hires him for the night.

James Newton Howard provides a sinister score for the film, and with loads of action and threatening undertones, the film is one heck of a ride. The build-up to the climax is a suspensful yet riveting journey of murder, but the closing sequence may disappoint a few viewers.

Despite its one flaw, the film deserves much praise, for its masterful direction, the intense and original plotline, and most of all, seeing Cruise in one of his most perfect roles.
