Oh, the stereotypical, epic romance. Hours of pretty fluff without much to cement it in your memory. Cold Mountain has a great story line, I'm sure its a fantastic book and well worth the read. Here are my dissapointments with the movie.

1) Nicole Kidman. What? After everyone's been raving about her performance? Yes. First off, her accent is unbelivable. You can hear the Aussie slur right underneath her soft southern slang. She floats through the movie in a romantic daze over Jude Law, and their romantic chemistry is lacking (to put it nicely). You've seen Nic act with Tom. You know what its like when her chemistry is heated and turned on. Don't look for it in this movie.

2)The main word for this movie is floats. Nicole learns to survive...float to Jude making his way home to her. Nicole writes long, sad letters...float to Jude making his way home to her. Nicole begs for food...float to Jude making his way home to her. This goes on for hours, folks. Good thing they're floating over beautiful scenery.

That said.

Renee Zellwegger is fantastic. Her portrayal of Ruby deserves to win her an Oscar, hands down. I almost wanted to give up after the first 20 minutes of the movie, then in walks Ruby, pulls the head off a rooster, and changes the whole mood from snoozer to splendid.

The war scenes are portrayed very well.

The music is heartbreakingly beautiful.

The scenery will take your breath away.

There are worse ways to spend an afternoon or evening. But instead of spending all of that money on treats and a show in the theatre, why not wait until video, when you can curl up on your couch and snooze off without feeling guilty. I recommend "Something's got to give" for the romance and comedic aspect, and if you're really in the mood for an epic, go see the movie that millions of people have already thrilled at this December, "Lord of the Rings-Return of the King".
