Miscast and Too Long

Nicole Kidman (Ada) was unconvincing as a daughter of the Confederacy. She never did strike the right rhythm in her attempt to drawl away like a Southern belle. Her tightly pulled back, porcelain doll looks also prevented my own suspension of disbelief. For the same reasons, Jude Law should not have been cast as the Southern soldier, Inman.
The story was about 45 minutes too long, with gratuitous violence.
The two bright spots in this film were Renee Zellweger (Ruby) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Minister), who both played character roles. Zellweger deserves any of the accolades that are sure to be heaped upon the movie by Hollywood insiders, who seem to forgive Kidman all too easily. Zellweger and Hoffman's work save my acting rating from failure. I should add that Natalie Portman also shined in her ten minutes on screen. We need to see her in more substantive roles. |
