TIM BURTON'S MASTERPIECE!

My first all-A review, this film is outstanding in all respects. Tim finally finds a story his surreal style of direction can fit so the result is more than just artfully quirky.

Albert Finney's character is one charming fellow, and his anecdotes are filled with so much fantasy, his realist son (Billy Crudup) has had enough to the point of estrangement. In an attempt to reconcile with his old man before the elder falls victim to a terminal illness, he longs to understad the man beneath the tall tales. But the oft-repeated stories continue, with Ewan McGregor playing the father as a younger man. The story reaches its climax when his son finally "gets" his father in a moment that will leave you in tears from its bittersweetness.

Wonderful performances from Finney, McGregor, Cruddup and Jessica Lange, as the young man's mother, who shares a memorable scene with Finney. Who would think a scene portraying longtime married couple could be so sexy and tender?

"Big Fish" is about as close to perfect as any movie I have seen in quite some time, and is without question, Tim Burton's finest film to date. It will likely be ignored come Oscar-time, but it is nevertheless a genuine contender for Best Picture of the Year.

See it. Run. Now.
