After this movie everyone will be searching for their inner "big fish". It's a whimsical tale of one man's life, which of course is all exagerated to make it sound more promising.
The man is now a soon to be grandfather and on his death bed. His son returns to his childhood home after 3 yrs of not speaking to him because of the way he acted at his wedding.
Basically the father, Edward Bloom, reminisces about his life and tells them again to his son, William and tells them the very first time to William's french wife Josephine. Like a fish, Edward is always thirsting for water. Always quenching imagination.
His story is of friendships, adventure, love and a long journey of discovering himself. William is tired of hearing all this because he knows everything his father has told him are lies and he is determined to get the truth before his father dies. So William goes on a mini-journey himself to discover who his father really is and what has he told him that has been true.
It's a touching story about growing up and following your heart.
Ewan McGregor was wonderful playing the young Edward Bloom. His southern accent sounded very authentic and he convinced me that he was one smooth man living life to the fullest.
Yet my favorite character would have to be Jenny. She seemed the most real and her expression when she sees her new house is so animated and believable that it made me smile. Basically I could feel her emotions changing more than any other character.
I'm not sure I agree with all the hype that this is a modern telling of "Wizard of OZ". Other than some of the not so human characters I saw no relationship at all. Honestly it shouldn't be compared to any movie because there is none like it.
Now I would normally say whether or not you should see this film. Well it's difficult really. If you like a fun storyline and a fairy-tale adventure that reminds you of childhood days then I suggest watching this now. If you don't like a story retold a bit choppy with more imagination then realisticness. Then don't pay for a ticket.
This is definetly "Academy Nomination" type. Whether it will win one or not, I do not know. |
