Nearly everything in "Bad Boys 2" explodes, from buildings to bodies to lizards. Unfortunitely the scripts implodes before the films end. Lucky for us, Lawrence and Smith still have what it takes to carry the movie thru. The story is very similar to the first film except we exchange heroine with ecstasy and a French villian with a Cuban villian. The problem is the story is overstuffed with unneeded extra layers with multiple baddies and double-crosses that lead the film away from our main characters. The real problem is a faux love story between Mike Lowrey (Smith) and Marcus Burnett's (Lawrence) little sister (Gabrielle Union)that takes up a lot of time and ends up dragging the film down. We all seen what director Michael Bay can do with a love story (Pearl Harbor). Dude, give up on it. What the scripts lack in originality it makes up for in its black humor. Many of the laughs come from very dark areas that include variety of things such as falling cadavers, probing cadavers, and of course, exploding cadavers. Yes, it's sick and disgusting but it got a reaction out of me every time. What also got a reaction out of me was Martin Lawrence who hasn't been this good since the original film. Lawrence has been reduced to mugging for the last few years with one over-the-top performance after another. Here, he seems at home. His performance is very grounded. Perhaps it has something to do with Will Smith taking the comic weight off his shoulders; he doesn't feel like he's carrying the entire film. For whatever reason, Lawrence should use this film as a template for future roles. Lastly, and not least-ah-ly, the action. What can I say, very fun and exciting stuff. Pure eye candy and plenty of it but just like Bruckheimer's last film (last weeks "Pirates...") I could of used one less action scene for a shorter running time. At nearly an epic length, the film could have used a reedit; maybe taking off twenty minutes or so. Even with the films many problems, "Bad Boys 2" delivers something I have been craving for a long time; a hard R action film that pulls every punch. In a land of PG-13 blood-free films that are just as violent as the R-rated flicks; "Bad Boys 2" reigns supreme with its severed corpses and flying body parts. This is the return of the "true" summer action film. |
