The Alamo is a great story worth telling, and the acting talent was there to put it all together.
The problem with the Alamo was the direction. In Master and Commander you got an appreciation for cannon balls and velocity.
In Private Ryan you got an appreciation for battle.
In The Alamo, the cannon balls and the battle sequences are very lame.
There was no sense of realism at all, and that took away from an otherwise good film. Budget problems or what?
Billy Bob stands out as Davey Crockett, and I suspect the persona he portrayed is pretty darn close to the real Crockett, humorous, intelligent, and understanding his larger than life status.
As a history lesson I think The Alamo does a good job, and I felt like the performances portraying the other historical figures captured who they truly were.
The portrayal of historical figures, and the on screen telling of the story are the strongest points of The Alamo. Pretty good show, I recommend it. |
