Having read both the professional and amateur reviews, I was expecting to be disappointed. In fact, the reviews here almost kept me away. So, I was pleasantly surprised. I thought the film was handled quite well -- the characterizations were much better than the stereotypical heroes of John Wayne's effort -- and I found the story much more compelling. I guess if you have no interest in a historical film, you should stay away. I may be atypical in having more than passing knowledge of the history of early Texas, but, frankly, if the negative reviewers had no interest in viewing a historical film, I have no idea why they bought their tickets in the first place. |
