There was one grievance of mine throughout this whole movie...it was so real. Maybe that is a good thing, or maybe it is a grief...but either way, it's the truth.
Christina Ricci's performance was so good, too good, in fact that it brought on painful memories of myself. (She has had depression in her real life as well so I'm sure she knows what she's representing in that character) This is where I'm torn. The movie was extremely depressing all around with no signs of light anywhere. I mean, this is in fact what depression is all ****.com and utter sadness.
If you want to watch this movie as a documentary of a depressed writer's life, or even use it to scare a teen cutter or drug abuser, it may be useful. Otherwise, it would not be the movie to put on during chick flick night or as a weekend event, etc. I really only recommend people who have had the illness themselves watch this. It might bring some inspiration or just overall acceptance that there ARE others who share this unseemingly lonely disease.
I did, however, desire to see more happiness as a conclusion. The movie was trying to prove some kind of overcoming of hurdles, but it was not shown long enough in the movie to have much of an impact.
I give it a "C+" not because it was "Flawed but worthy," but because it could be great for some, but way to close to home to handle, for others. |
