While this isn't a movie you would want to rent and watch with the family on a friday night, it is one that deserves a trip home with you from the video store. Kudos to Cage for tackling such a dirty, taboo topic for his directorial debut.
James Franco stars as Sonny, a young man who's mother pimped him out as a young boy. When Sonny returns from the Army, he tries to get out of the business, but his drawn back in when he realizes that he doesnt have the skills of a "square," or non-whore. He as sexual encounters with old rich women, and really old kinky women. With the exception of a few butt-shots and nipple shows, there is no gratuitous nudity. The tastful sex scenes show the different tricks that Sonny encounters "on the job." Carol, Mena Suvari, is a pretty young woman that Sonny's mother, Jewel, pimps out. Sonny and Carol yearn for the life of a sqaure, but don'd know how to leave the life. Sonny can't leave because he is the only financial support his mother has. Sonny leads a very troubled, sex packed life. I like the overall mood of the movie. It feels very dark, but very sunny at the same time. Sonny is the light in a world of shame and dirty tricks. He sees what he could have, and wants it so bad, but he cant leave the only thing he knows. |
