Sonny BOY!!!

Okay. I didn't even know that there was a movie called Sonny. It just went off literally two minutes ago on TV and I was compelled to write this review. I don't know what the sam hell is wrong with the critics, because this movie blew me away. Call me crazy, but I loved it. The story was very unique: a perturbed soldier returns from the army to a dysfunctional family in Louisiana and the only life he knows: male prositution. However if you want to see a "sunshiny day", cheer-you-right-up film, this ain't it. Sonny's struggles with his estranged mother, prostitute partner/girlfriend, and real father make this movie complete. In my opinion, the cast nailed the acting head on. I felt that the "Nalins"(New Orleans to you Northern folk) accents, especially Brenda Blethlyn's, were convincing and authentic. Also, this movie prooves a great point: Give James Dean a good script and he will deliver. He is actually a stand-up actor. He may have been argueabley Oscar-worthy. Both Mena Suvari and Harry Dean Stanton gave powerful supporting performances. The direction was solid. I came as only it could from the mind of Nicholas Cage. The visuals (sex scenes) though disturbing, made you feel like you were in the room with Sonny and Carol. Overall I really liked this film, and I suggest it to the according audiences. Hint: the ending is perfect, even though it may disappoint some. |
