This movie would have made a decent episode on television. As a movie it is one of the worst. As the ending of an era (assuming no further TNG movies will be produced) it is a total disgrace. The story is simple (too simple) to make room for the lengthy action scenes. In a few minutes we witness the collapse of the Romulan empire (just like that), then we see a bit of the cast, and then we are off on the action trip. The ending is also incredibly predictable and rushed (much like in Generations). There are no great moments, no great lines, in fact nothing memorable at all. The dialogue and particiaption of the rest of the cast (other than Picard) is lacking. The villain is unconvincing at best and comes accross like a madman of sorts without any real style, character or motivation. This is particularly disapointing as even the worst Trek movies had good villains (e.g. ST 5,7, 9 and to a lesser degree ST 3). Overall its worth watching if you are a Trekkie (like me) but dont expect an epic ending like ST 6 or even a good face off like ST 2. Its essentially an episode with a huge budget, nothing more. In my opinion its time to fire Mr. Berman or whoever is in charge and bring back the people who worked on the original movies. |
