The story was original and it would capture your attention within the first five minutes of watching it, so why did this movie end up with a D+?
I think that there could have been much more imagination put into this movie, that's why. While telling us a part of the real incident is a novel idea, I don't think that the graphic detail is really something that we could stand to see. Also, the deaths that people died were quite gruesome, which would be fine with me, except that we watch them in their last moments, bleeding to death or writhing from having a wire cut them into two. With a bit of creativity and imagination (perhaps shooting from a different camera angle), this movie would have been improved tremendously.
The logic is somewhat flawed, although that's to be expected with any fictional movie. The characters weren't easy to relate to, which is definitely a downside for such a gory, violent movie. The one sympathetic character in this story is the little girl whose ghost is trapped on the ship, but whose soul hasn't been violated in the way that the souls of her fellow passengers on that fateful night have. She's the reason that the story can make any sense in the first place.
The ending is clever, but trite all the same. While we get resolution in the form of Julianna Marguiles, we also get a spark (or hint of a sequel for you cynics out there) of it happening all over again.
I guess if you really like the actors or the genre, this movie would be great for you to see, but it's not something that I would highly recommend. |
