Barbershop has some outrageous plot attributes, mainly the stealing of an ATM machine, and the dragging of it all over Chicago, but is never lacking in substance. The film mainly focuses on Calvin, the second generation owner of the barbershop, and his pregnant wife. Calvin is constantly feeling like he needs to do something in order to make more money to provide for his wife and soon-to-be family, although his get-rich schemes fail one after the other. He is afraid to get stuck running the barbershop for the rest of his life, until a loanshark, by the name of Lester Wallace, offers to take over the shop. Calvin is convinced that it's his only way to get rid of his 'dumpy' shop, and jumps at the opportunity. It isn't until later, while talking with the other barbers, that he realizes what the barbershop means to them and the surrounding community in the south side of Chicago. Calvin learns to respect his craft, and to realize that everything in life comes from hard work. The oldest barber reminds of them of what it was like to struggle for equality back in the 60's, which the young in the community take for granted. Barbershop defies cliché racial stereotypes, bites hard on some negative modern-day attitudes, and provides enough whacky antics to have you falling off your chair with laughter. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
