I don't know what a lot of people were expecting when they went to see this movie... perhaps a bunch of slapstick jokes which features black people acting like fools, junkies, slackers, and drug addicts. Although this movie included sub-plots which either discussed or had these elements, that is not what this movie was.
This movie is, let's face it, is a black comedy. But, unlike other black comedies, this one is smart. This one has the courage to go where others have not. The discussions about race, culture, pride, tradition are all things which people in this country care about... and yes, black people care about these things, too. Unlike movies like "Friday" "South Central" "Don't Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking your juice in the Hood" "Juice" "Menace to Society" "BAPS" and "How to be a Player"... which are all either drug/crime related stories, or slightly degrading and minstrel-like in character,"Barbershop" seeks to broaden the image of black people by engaging the stylists and the patrons in the shop in a debate, an intelligent debate, that makes black people seem, to other races, more than a gun-toting, sex-crazed, slapstick people. If people didn't like this movie, I think that they just didn't get it, or they should go back in time to the 1920's... maybe they would like a minstrel show. |
