This is perhaps one of the most original--and daring--movies I've seen in awhile, especially given its subject matter. Rather than repeat the typical Hollywood belief that S/M is a dark brutal fetish in which people "get too involved" and wind up killing each other, this movie is much more concerned with the characters themselves, and the sort of relationship that ends of working FOR THEM (which, for me, makes this film far more realistic and intriguing, not to mention entertaining). Along the way, the movie is dark, funny, and erotic all at the same time.
The casting in particular is wonderful. Maggie Gyllenhaal is perfect in her role as the lonely, shy girl trying not only to find love, but more importantly to find a way to express herself. James Spader and Jeremy Davies are also an excellent match for their roles. In fact, my only real criticism of this movie is how oddly cold Gyllenhaal's character behaves towards poor Davies' near the end, which doesn't really seem in keeping with who she is. Other than that, I'd recommend NOT watching this film with your parents. Otherwise, have a ball. |
