"About A Boy" is extremely fresh and funny. Taking a slightly more dramatic plot and twisting it into a hilarious, yet romantic comedy seems almost insane. None the less, it's pulled off.
Will (Hugh Grant) is a middle aged bachelor living off of the family fortune. He likes being alone and has every day of his life planned down to the minute...until, by chance, he meets an awkward young boy named Marcus who turns his quiet, little, island type life upside-down. Will's first impulse is to keep Marcus away so he can keep living his life the way he systematically put it together, but Marcus latches onto him like a leech, forcing Will to actually form some sort of friendship...and not just with him, but with Marcus's mum also (Toni Collette.)
The script for this film is phenomenal, which, supported by a great cast, creates a wonderful movie. You'll fall in love with each and every character. The wit and humor couldn't have been done better. This movie is a must have for anyone who is looking for a bit of off-color humor and whole-hearted laughs.
The acting is wonderful and really draws you into the characters. And the simple life truths exploited in this film will have you smiling at the irony. It's an all-around great film and I recommend it to anyone with a sense of humor. |
