About a boy is a magnificent film that blends three genres together, all shadowed by the contemnporary culture of London. My review is more like an appraisal rather than a review. The best I can suggest is to watch the film.
Firstly the blend of atmospheres: Comedic, dramatic and romantic is magnificent. This should not only credit Nick Hornby, but also the actors who did a spectacular job.
Secondly, the realistic portrayal of London life is something to be thankful for. Even now in 2005, about a boy remains very much accurate in terms of the London atmosphere.
Finally and most importantly, it is an inspirational film in many different ways. It could change one's opinion about certain things.
The only negative point I could point out about the film was the lack of certain scenes from the book which would have created a marvellous addition to the film.
Nevertheless, About a boy has been recorded as a great film of inspiration. If there is one word to sum uo the film, it would be, "Spectacular!" |
