I remember watching the very late late showing of this film at 1:30 am in the morning in Abu Dhabi a couple of summers ago. I was the only guy in the cinema apart from a father with his two eight year old kids and a couple teenage guys.
I initially prepared my self to be scared s***less , but as the film proceeded it turned out to be more of a sci-fi flic than a horror flim. Although a little disappointed on the fact that it didnt live up to expectations {i was expecting something along the lines of Night Of The Living Dead} the film still managed to entertain.
Ok some of the CGI Zombies werent really that creepy {apart from the female scientist who gets both her knee caps shot off} and the acting was not really that good, Resident Evil still managed to have you on the edge of your seat, as you come to realise that the real villain in this film is Hal's {the super computer from 2001:Space Odessy} grand daughter. Ok i am kidding, but she was a bitch of a computer , and the scene where the marine guys are trapped in the hallway with a deadly laser system was one of the best ever in sci fi. I mentioned the bad acting however to be fair, Milla Jovavich's performance was good and perhaps the best thing in this film.
Resident Evil was the 1st in a new wave of zombie movies for the new millenium and is perhaps still one of the best so far to come out since 2000 past by. It is infinately better than House Of The Dead and even superior to Dawn Of The Dead 2004, however it is still overshadowed by 28 Days Later.
But a strength of this movie is that it doesnt try to be too preachy with its Zombie message {you know, the whole metaphor for how human beings have become like mindless walking drones etc etc}. However it does still attack the evil of Multiglomorates and big business by making them the true Resident Evil, as it is clearly stated at the beginning of the film, that their products are present in nearly every residential home.
Luckily you dont really have to think too much about this and you will be safe to just switch of your brain for an hour and a half ....and enjoy the sexy Milla doing some nifty karate on a zombie dog, while wearing a skimpy red evening dinner out-fit! |
