When you watch the first five minutes of this film, you begin to think, "This is the man directing Harry Potter 3? Oh dear God."
It starts off showing the two main young men getting it on with their girlfriends. (And to those who are looking for it, yes it is explicit) Alfonso Cuaron then goes on to show the boys and developes their friendship. They masturbate, smoke pot, drink, etc.
After Alfonso shows their friendship (and how close they truly are as friends), he then moves onto the story that will change their lives forever.
Cut to the wedding scene. They meet one of the boys' distant cousins. Eventually al three go on a road trip to a beach they aren't even sure exists.
The trip is what is truly memorable; traveling through Mexico and seeing life the way it is for those who live in the third-world sections. On the trip there is more sex, boozing, and pot-smoking.
And while traveling through the tale of two young men you see perfectly what life is like for guys entering manhood. You also see betrayal, lust, life as it is in mexico (for both the rich and poor), and most of all friendship.
Remeber what I said at the beginning of this review? That within the first five minutes, you are scared of how Harry Potter 3 is going to turn out? After watching this movie you are wondering if Harry Potter 3 could actually pull off an Oscar; if it is anywhere near as good as "Y Tu Mama Tambien." |
