is what this movie gave me. I knew that our military is something to be praised and respected but I wasn't truly giving them their due....Then Black Hawk Down was played in my DVD and I was grateful that this movie was ever made. Back in 1993, i heard about the situation in Somalia. But I had my own situations like happy hour and good clean fun. So viewing this film for the first time in 2000 wasnt entirely a shock but the brutality and the total disregard for human life in other parts of the world came into my view for the first time ever.
Based on actual facts...........
The story follows the intervention of the U.N. and the U.S. Marines in Somalia, to insure the delivery of food to the starving population. After the food convoys left, the warlords were again confiscating food deliveries, to sell on the black market.

The movie depicts graphically what a hell hole the country had become, with the collapse of social order and law enforcement, and the growth of a savage civil war among armed clans (also depicted in the film "Tears of the Sun"). Everything in the capital of Mogadishu had been destroyed, the buildings covered with bullet holes, then stripped for salvage. At night, camp fires glowed in the empty rooms of former government buildings.
Diplomatic efforts to achieve a cease fire had failed, the most powerful warlord, Aidid, declared war on the U.N. and massacred 27 Pakistani peacekeepers. the U.N. and U.S. decided that he was the major pain in the ass towards an agreement with the clan leaders.

When local intelligence indicated that several of Aidid's top lieutenants were going to attend a high level meeting at a house in the capital, an operation was planned to assault and capture these men, and force a settlement on Aidid. A joint Army Ranger and Delta Force force was created. The Delta Force commandos would seize the building and apprehend the hostages, while the Rangers would heli in and hold the perimeter. On the ground a relief convoy of humvees and half ton trucks would move in to transport the hostages and combatants back to the airbase that the military had established a few miles from the heart of the city.
The firepower and resiliency of the warlords and smaller militias were underestimated and what follows, this is where the movie begins to grip the viewer. The situation gets worst for our troops as the minutes and hours go by.
I recommend this film. If you have been looking for motivation to follow global events watch this film. The bravey of those soldiers is unparallel and Ridley Scott the director captures that. The book is also amazing, the book follows over 100 soldiers, you get to know them, their childhood, their fears, and their destiny.
"Black Hawk Down" the movie and the book will grab you and never let you go. No doubt you will say to your self, I cant believe this really happened in 1993.

Support our Troops!
"Black Hawk Down" should be viewed in America's High School history classes.
