Great Movie! (even if not completey accurate)

First off, I would like to say that this is by far the best movie I have seen in many, many years. The acting was fantastic, the cinematography was astounding, and all-in-all it was just awesome - the very reason why most of us go to see a movie in the first place.
The *only* problem I had with it, was the fact that it deviated a LOT from the book. I didn't recognize just how much it did the first time I went to see the movie, as it had been a while since the last time I had read the 'first' book (second, if you count "The Hobbit" as the true first book, as I do.)
But now, after having seen the movie several times, I had decided to go back and re-read the trilogy once again, and was amazed at the amount of the story that was different from what was portrayed in the movie, most especially the 'rescue' of Frodo from the Black Riders by Arwen. Excuse me?! Arwen never appeared in the book until a dinner that was held just before the Council of Elrond, and even then, she only appeared briefly. Also, in the book the four Hobbits began their adventure together, not after meeting up in a corn field by accident.
There are numerous such discrepancies, that 'kind of' detract from the original integrity of the story, but I suppose they can be overlooked for the sheer enjoyment of finally being able to see the materpiece of Tolkein brought to the screen.
I just recommend to all who have seen the movies, but have NOT read the books -- do yourselves a VERY BIG favor, and read them!!! They are far, far better than you can imagine! But start with "The Hobbit" as it gives much more of a background to the whole series. |
