Excellent, inspirational occult film

Here we have a horror film from 1960, back in a day where many things seen as cliche today were not then. Keeping that in mind while watching this, we find what is actually a forgotten gem in the horror world.

What stands out to me is the film's tremendous atmosphere. The opening credits feature a painting of Death in which he is beckoning over a cliff, and you can see a shadowy face inside the darkness of his hood. This stands out as a most eerie shot and introduces the film in a way unusually nicely done, giving you the creeps from the start. The music also helps. The withces' hymns are very ominous/mysterious sounding, and create an air of their own. This, along with cool sets of foggy, old-fashioned towns and ancient cemeteries help imprint this film on your mind.

Next, the film uses a tactic similar to that of Messiah of Evil and perhaps even The Shining (at points). As the girl walks through the town and the people, one by one, stop and just stare at her, unmoving, for minutes at a time, a calm, all-knowing look on their faces... freaks me out every time. I love it, very nightmarish.

Amyway, those were the things that stood out for me about this film. If you are a horror enthusiast, this will definitely strengthen your collection.
