You know, it was hard for me to see Guy Pearce in a non- "bad guy" or "twisted guy" role.
The beginning of the film was very slow and aggravating... I can't think of half the things that drove me insane about introducing his character, the time machine itself, and going back the first few times. He builds the machine to stop the death of his fiancee who was killed in the park, but he was too much of a wuss to do anything when he had ample time. Then he takes a week or a month to build the machine... now this is like the 1800's, so I'm to believe he built the machine that fast? Okay, right. He goes back before his fiancee is shot but leaves her for a sec and she's killed in a carrage accident. Why he didn't talk to his self in that timeline to try to come up with something, I don't know. So then he goes slowly into the future, has an accident, then goes thousands of years into the future where he discovers a time with only half a moon and humanity has split into 2 species.
I don't believe in evolution, but suspending disbelief and taking evolution as face, there is no way humans 800,000 from now will look like supermodels from now. Even if they did, there's no way English as a language would survive.
*sigh*
Okay, by this time I realized that if I was going to enjoy this movie at all, I really had to shut most of my logical brain off and enjoy the visuals. Mmmmmm, Samantha Mumba!!!!!!!! The cgi wasn't so great, but it was interesting. Guy's character learned how to fight in his dreams or something, because nowhere in the movie did he take any lessons since his fiancee was killed.
Ummm... okay, I'll stop now. All in all, this is worth a watch as long as someone else rented it (like in my case). I take that back. Watch something better. Instead of watching this go watch Back to the Future, okay? |
