The plot is loosely based on the book. And I do mean loosely. Perhaps the director wanted to infuse some originality into the film, but if you're basing the movie on a very-well known novel, no adjustments are really necessary to the script. I was also under the impression that the movie was dumbed down a bit in hopes to appeal to a wider audience. And, not surprisingly, as it is often the case in such instances, the movie loses the same appeal that the book has. With taking out all the profoundness of the book, one is left with a sense of absurdity and a misunderstanding of the futuristic world depicted in a movie.
The failure of the movie was simply in poor choices of the director. The actors did just fine with the script they had to work with. Samantha Mumba delivers a surprisingly good performance and Guy Pearce... well, there's only so much you can ask of Guy Pearce but he did well in his own right.
The only part that I really liked about the movie were the phenomenal visuals. If one can forget for a moment about all the flaws and holes in the plot and its discrepancies with the book, one can actually have a visual feast for the eyes. Unfortunately for Simon Wells, the visuals alone are never enough to save a movie from failing miserably. And fails miserably it does.
