A wise poet once wrote,"The child is the father of the man."Its a difficult line to make sense of,yet the perfect fit for the complex movie. While the father is on the symbolic road to loss of faith and his own humanity, his son is trying his best to keep a sense of self thru prayer, faith and in the final scene thru confronting good/evil,even if it means saving his father's life. The story, related in a flashback to the 1930's tells of a boy's steadfast love for his father who worked in organized crime collections. One night the father returns home and discovers his family slain by a memberof his own extended family. The sole surving school age son and the man leave on a road laden with distruction and revenge.Various eeire characters are introduced along backroads of Illinois where the story was filmed and sepia city scenes make for depression era dipiction. As the boy looks back to his crime spree days with his dad before the end,he is in a quandry about what other people have said about his father and how he remembers him.His final words carry the film when he sates,"Yet, he was my father."
