The 1:48 running time felt like 30 minutes...

The direction of James Cameron is missing in this long-awaited sequel to the Terminator series, and you can just feel it. Jonathan Mostow's work is far from average, but it just wasn't enough to keep this saga going. The film literally has to push you from scene to scene and never seems to grasp a hold of your conscious. Although there were some interesting twists and plenty of explosive effects, camera angles and motion just seemed a bit dull. Incorporating humor in serious situations was Cameron's trademark in the first two episodes, along with slow-moving and panning camera shots. Both are clearly missing in this installment.
T-3 introduces several new characters not mentioned in the previous two films. Part of the plot is to show that John Connor isn't the only important figure that the machines are targeting. The Anti-Terminator codenamed T-X, which is played by Kristanna Loken, just doesn't seem to have the same cunning determination of the last "evil" Terminator played by Robert Patrick in T-2. Kristanna's beauty diminishes any sense of real danger to the other main characters.
Worst of all is the dialogue. It's not necessarily what is said, but how it's worked into each scene. Of course, the lines cited by Schwarzenegger are meant to sound like they're read, but it doesn't feel authentic almost like they're forced last-minute entries.
John Connor also fails to resemble his youthful counterpart from T-2. Instead of moving in the direction of becoming a leader, it seems like he's taken steps backward. It's like he's discovering his fate all over again at a point where he should be ready to take charge of it.
I don't know about other reviewers, but I was really hoping for a meaningful T-3. The movie was good, but far from great. Let's just hope the next one gives us a fresh look... |
