Last year when I heard T3 was in production I almost had a heart attack. But then I heard that James Cameron wasn't going to return to write and direct. This was his baby. No Cameron...will it be as great as 1 and 2? It's not as great as the original or the outstanding T2 but T3 surprised me how good it was. The special effects were amazing in the future war and action sequences. Nick Stahl was excellent as John Connor. He totally blew away Edward Furlong. Claire Danes did a superb job also. Kristanna Loken was terrific as the T-X but not as menacing as the T-1000 was. She was just so attractive I sometimes had a hard time looking past that. But then again who wants to have an unattractive female terminator? Remember, at one time the studio was considering Chyna for God's sake. Bringing in a female terminator was a great idea giving it a more comic book tone since female terminators only existed in the comics. Although it worked more in the comics since they were drawn and you're not distracted by a woman terminator's good looks. It was great to have Arnold come back as the T-800. It wouldn't truly be a Terminator movie without him. But without Cameron's direction his performance wasn't as great. Don't get me wrong he did a good job but he was the best in T2. No Linda Hamilton was a bummer but after a while you forget about Sarah Connor since the story didn't revolve around her anymore. The story had a couple of gaps like how old was John Connor in T2 and how old is he now didn't really make sense plus what year was T2 set it and what year is it in T3? All we know is that it has been 10 years. The running time bothered me a little. I think the screenplay should've been a little longer. But the movie was unpredictable which is rare these days and the ending will surprise you. It definately leaves the door open for T4. The editing was also great. Despite the short script. It was timed very well and didn't have any unwanted footage. The sound was good but not as memorable as T2. Overall I'd give Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines an A- but if Cameron would've written the script it would have retained that humanist theme and feel from the first two films and if he had directed it would've been more serious. It also most likely would have earned an A+. |
