I know nobody is going to read this because it is so long after the release, but I'm writing it anyway. This is simply one of the most amazing films ever. It is usually a feast or famine kind of thing with the user ratings (and yes, I read them all). I believe I have figured out the lines here. People that said it was terrible were generally idiots. They couldn't spell, had incoherent sentences, and showed that they were completely impatient. To sum it up one of them said to rent it, but also get JURASSIC PARK 3, in case Vanilla Sky sucked. Wow, that says it all! On the other hand, the positive reviews generally were very articulate (one used the word, vertiginous), very detailed, and talked about the deeper meanings of the film, not just its enjoyabiliy.
If the makers of Vanilla Sky had been trying to make a blockbuster film, they would have failed. Obviously, most people go to the movies to not think; to escape. If you want to watch a film with twists and turns, and or that has deep emotional meaning, watch Vanilla Sky.
The first time I watched it, I went in thinking it was some sort of love triangle/Fatal Attraction thing. I had no idea about the sci-fi elements or that it was at times really creepy. In fact, I watched it and the Ring the same night and had my nightmares about....Vanilla Sky. It touches on real themes. Now, after having seen it the 4th time, I know its deepest meaning...that each decision you make in your life has consequences.
The acting in this film is top notch. Tom Cruise was perfectly cast and is a vastly underrated actor to begin with. Penelope Cruz is fantastic. This is the first of her films I have seen and I really never found her that attractive, but when I saw this film, I fell in love with her character right along with Tom's character. She was so cute, sweet, and funny, I felt his pain and joy the whole time. Cameron Diaz was fantastic as well. She truly portrayed the "saddest girl to ever hold a martini" quite convincingly. She also was very frightening when she needed to be. Jason Lee gave the most genuine performance of all. He was the perfect funny, sarcastic, 3rd wheel ever and he felt like a true friend. Kurt Russell was also a nice addition to the film.
I loved the beauty of Vanilla Sky. That's probably what this latest viewing gave me the most. I caught more of the meaning and clues, but a lot of the subtle cinematography that I had missed.
In the end, if you are into films that are entertaining, beautiful, meaningful and aren't afraid to think or feel, see this movie as many times as you can. If you want to see a "movie" go rent Jurassic Park 3.

P.S.-To all those who say this movie is too confusing, try paying attention. There are clues dropped from the first minute of the film about what is going on and it is thouroughly explained in the end without any plot holes. USE YOUR BRAINS PLEASE!!!!
