I went to see this movie when it was in the cinemas and was expecting a bog standard straight forward movie. I came out thinking "That was nothing like what I expected and was rubbish, complete cop out finale" I then saw it on Channel 4 and thought "Hold the phone?!" This is definitely a film you have to see more than once, but aren't they the best?! It's one of those films where each time you enjoy it more each time for noticing little things you didn't notice before. I saw the original recently too, and as unpopular as this opinion may be, I found 'Vanilla Sky' better. The bond between Aames and Shelby is better in Vanilla Sky especially. Some of the brilliant lines from the original have been kept but Crowe has added some extra brilliant touches in the script. Crowe's attention to detail makes this movie enjoyable over and over again, little touches in backgrounds to hint at things. Cruise's performance is powerful, a lovable rogue who you empathise with by the end, lacking in the original where his character leaves you unsympathetic. Cruz's performance is so much better than in Abre los Ojos and Cameron Diaz gives her role the love and desperation it lacked in the original. One unsung hero of the piece though is Kurt Russell. His performance as Cruise's psychologist is amazing and really inspires sympathy and compassion for Cruise. Definitely a film to watch but only if you are willing to watch it more than once with an open mind. |
