One of my all time favorites, definitely in my top ten. This is a deeply profound, personal work of art by Cameron Crowe, who has a knack for directing excellent dramas. This is a nearly shot for shot redoing of an excellent Spanish film called Open Your Eyes (Abre Los Ojos) which also features Penelope Cruz in the same role she played in the original! This remake is actually superior to the original which isn't the norm for American remakes of foreign films.Crowe was actually so moved after after seeing Open Your Eyes that he felt a compulsion to remake it.He obviously put a lot of effort into it and it shows. This film has a lot to say about choices and consequences, cause and effect as well as second chances.Crowe offers up a lot of visually stunning sequences of great power. Some are simply beautiful, others are surreal and haunting.Critics complained that Tom Cruise's mega-watt star power spoiled this film but I must disagree. He was perfect in the part and I can't imagine anyone else in the lead role.People need to stop knocking his skills as an actor-he is immensely talented and can play a variety of roles.the supporting cast also did great work.Kurt Russell was great and so was Cameron Diaz.Jason Lee was his usual charismatic self and Penelope Cruz steals the show every minute she appears on screen. She is so hot.I can't say enough about how great this movie is.It's a shame that it is so underrated, people, especially the critics obviously missed the point and those who didn't get it weren't paying attention beacuse Crowe takes plenty of time at the end to set evrything straight.Tech Support! Based on the trailers I never expected a film of such magnitude and meaning. What a wonderful surprise.I've seen this movie probably fifteen times in the past four years and I own it and cherish it.Beautiful and haunting with an amazing soundtrack, this is Cameron Crowe's best work to date and also one of Cruise's best roles ever. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend renting it today. Right now. Go. |
