Boogie Nights in English Countryside
by Melissa (movies profile) May 28, 2004
Not for the faint of heart or stomach.

A married couple, another couple, and two odd supercargo are living in a country house in England. Three Americans come to visit. All plan to do drugs, and they do, enthusiastically, again and again, despite the bad experiences they have. Concurrently, twisted people around the world are committing grisly murders and posting "souvenir" graphics of their efforts on the Internet, supposedly as members of a cult group. Is a cult member in the English house, or are the clues we see the result of bad drug trips?

The characters are repellant but well-developed and fascinating. The story has a plot, though it takes a while to realize it, and carries on at a pace faster and faster till the shocking end.

Paul Bettany of "A Knight's Tale," "A Beautiful Mind," "Master & Commander," and "Dogville," plays the male half of the married couple.

The movie on DVD would be more rewarding if there were subtitles and other DVD features (sound, commentary) we have come to expect. English English is not American English.

"Boogie Nights" is a well-made movie with a grim subject, a dark and dreary drama. "Mood Swingers" is similar. For fans of the weird or grisly, this is worth seeing. If you are like most people and prefer fluffy comedies, stay far, far away.
